EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)
EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach found to be approved for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other emotional conditions. Sometimes past traumas can leave us feeling stuck or unable to talk about what happened. All the feelings, thoughts, sights, and sounds associated with a particular trauma are ‘trapped’ in the nervous system and are often reenacted in current events by making us feel overly anxious or depressed. When the brain is unable to process these negative emotions, the distress continues to live on in our nervous system and cause disturbance in our functioning.
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation which activates the left and right side of the brain and allows them to communicate better. This causes the reprocessing of the emotional material and desensitizes us to the traumatic nature of the event. Previously ‘trapped’ memories, thoughts, and emotions are ‘unlocked’ and traumas are integrated in a healthier way. This empowers us to live fully and be comfortable, once again, in our own skin.
EMDR can also aid the resolution of following conditions:
• Trauma/PTSD
• Depression
• Phobias
• Anxiety/Panic attacks
• Low Self Esteem
• Overwhelming fears
• Performance anxiety
• Trust issues
• Irritability/anger
